Who we are

Whisht! Lads, listen to the podcast.

The North East Folklore Society exists to gather and share the stories shaped by the North East: our history, stories, and the canny people in it.

We’re interested in folklore as something living that can be participated with, not something from the past that has lost meaning. Here we share traditions and tales, beliefs and superstitions, and all the ways local folk are keeping it going.

There’s loads of great folklore stuff happening in the UK at the moment and the North East Folklore Society aims to shine a spotlight on all that we have here: the sites, stories, and the opportunities to get involved. By having a local focus we hope you feel rooted, included, and represented. Whether you live here, have moved away, or just feel a connection with the region: everyone is welcome.

The Society isn’t an authority or an archive. And you definitely don’t need to be an academic, folklorist, or historian to be involved: it’s a place to participate and be included. Alongside this, we aim to highlight and support folk-adjacent creatives working in the region today; the artists, musicians, storytellers, groups, and organisers who continue to carry these traditions forward in their own ways. You’ll find them in the Find Folk Section.

At its heart, the North East Folklore Society is about community and belonging. About noticing where you are. About understanding the ground beneath your feet, and the people who have stood on it before, as a way of staying connected – to place, to community, and to each other.

Gan canny, stay curious – and hope to see you soon.
